How Technology is Transforming Tanzania’s National Parks and Wildlife Management

For more than six decades, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has stood at the forefront of wildlife conservation, protecting some of the world’s most iconic natural landscapes. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the majestic peaks of Kilimanjaro, TANAPA’s mission has always been centred on preserving biodiversity while promoting sustainable tourism.

Today, that mission is increasingly supported by technology. Through the innovative use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), TANAPA is transforming the way conservation decisions are made, resources are managed, and challenges are addressed across Tanzania’s protected areas.

This commitment to digital transformation has earned TANAPA international recognition after receiving a GIS Award for the African region from Esri Eastern Africa, acknowledging the organisation’s outstanding application of ArcGIS technology in conservation and tourism management.

The award was presented on June 18, 2026, by Esri Eastern Africa Customer Success Manager and Representative, Ms. Monica Mwanzia, who praised TANAPA’s effective use of GIS in collecting field data, processing geographic information, and developing detailed maps to support conservation activities.

“Through its advanced application of GIS technology, TANAPA has demonstrated how spatial information can improve planning, monitoring, and decision-making in conservation,” Ms. Mwanzia said during the award presentation.

Technology Supporting Conservation Decisions

Speaking on behalf of the TANAPA Conservation Commissioner, Deputy Conservation Commissioner for Conservation and Business Development, Massana Mwishawa, described the award as a significant achievement for both TANAPA and Tanzania.

He said the recognition reflects the organisation’s continued investment in modern technologies that strengthen conservation efforts and align with global scientific advancements.

“This achievement is an honour for the nation and TANAPA as a whole. It motivates us to continue investing in the effective use of GIS systems as we keep pace with developments in science and technology worldwide,” Mwishawa said.

TANAPA has integrated GIS into its operations for more than 15 years, making it an essential tool in addressing conservation challenges. The technology has helped the authority analyse land-use patterns, manage relationships between protected areas and neighbouring communities, improve operational planning, and strengthen the protection of natural resources.

From Maps to Action on the Ground

Beyond producing maps, GIS has become a powerful decision-support system for conservation officers working in the field.

According to TANAPA GIS Unit Head, Dr. Abel Mtui, the system has improved accountability and efficiency among staff by enabling accurate tracking of field activities and providing reliable information for management decisions.

Through GIS, TANAPA can monitor inspected areas, measure patrol coverage, analyse wildlife distribution patterns, identify locations affected by poaching threats, and determine areas with potential for tourism investment.

The technology also supports planning for critical tourism infrastructure, including accommodation facilities, roads, and airstrips, ensuring that development takes place while maintaining environmental sustainability.

A Digital Journey Since 1959

Since its establishment in 1959, TANAPA has continued to evolve alongside technological advancements. The organisation has expanded its use of GIS, information and communication technology (ICT), and other digital systems in conservation management, tourism development, revenue collection, and procurement processes.

These innovations have strengthened operational efficiency and contributed to TANAPA’s growing reputation as a modern conservation authority.

The GIS award from Esri Eastern Africa represents more than a technological achievement; it highlights the role of innovation in protecting Tanzania’s natural heritage. As conservation challenges become increasingly complex, TANAPA’s investment in digital tools demonstrates how science and technology can work together to secure the future of wildlife and protected areas for generations to come.
