Nairobi: How Spatial Data and Maps Are Empowering Advocacy for the Urban Poor

In Nairobi’s informal settlements, access to reliable information can make the difference between being overlooked and having a voice in decisions that directly affect communities. In May 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, approximately 7,000 people living in the Kariobangi settlement were forcibly evicted to make way for a sewer infrastructure project. In the days that followed, demolitions destroyed homes and displaced residents, leaving many families facing an uncertain future.
