How Being Involved in Esri YPN Gains You GISP Contribution Points
In the fast-evolving field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), continuous professional development is essential for standing out in a competitive industry. This growth can take many forms, including advanced education, participation in industry conferences, or earning professional credentials such as the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification offered by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI).
The GISP certification is widely regarded as a gold standard in the geospatial profession. It enables GIS professionals to demonstrate their expertise, commitment, and depth of knowledge. To obtain the certification, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive examination and submit a portfolio that highlights their academic background, professional experience, community involvement, and relevant extracurricular contributions.
GISCI recognizes active participation in professional organizations such as the Esri Young Professionals Network (YPN)—as a valuable component of a strong GISP portfolio. One effective way to earn GISP contribution points is by serving as a YPN Ambassador.
Esri YPN Ambassador Opportunities
The Esri YPN Ambassador Program offers three distinct ambassador roles, each aligned with different GISP contribution categories.
GIS-Related Professional Association Involvement
Under Section II of the GISP Contribution Point Schedule, candidates can earn one point for involvement in a GIS-related professional association. Serving as an Esri YPN Ambassador qualifies under this category.
To become a YPN Ambassador, participants are required to actively engage in the YPN Esri Community and on professional social platforms such as LinkedIn. Upon completing the program requirements, ambassadors may apply for a YPN Ambassador badge and certificate, which can be used as official documentation of professional association involvement for GISP contribution points.

GIS Publications
Candidates can earn contribution points for GIS publications by authoring and publishing articles. Through the YPN Content Ambassador pathway, participants have the opportunity to write and promote a blog post published on the YPN Blog within the Esri Community.
Once the blog post is published, contributors can apply for the YPN Ambassador badge and certificate as proof of completion, helping strengthen their GISP portfolio through documented publication contributions.

Other GIS Contributions
The YPN Event Ambassador role allows candidates to earn contribution points under the “Other GIS Contributions” category. This role involves participating in Esri YPN-hosted virtual or in-person events or organizing an event that features Esri YPN as part of the discussion.
After meeting the event participation or organization requirements, participants can apply for the YPN Event Ambassador badge and certificate, which serves as verification for GISP contribution points.

By becoming a YPN Ambassador, Content Ambassador, and/or Event Ambassador, GIS professionals can earn valuable contribution points toward GISP certification. Beyond strengthening your GISP application, these roles provide opportunities to expand your professional network, build leadership skills, and gain deeper insights into the GIS community.
