Looking back, Mwangi sums up his internship in three words: fun, intensive, eye-opening. It was fun because of the incredible people he met fellow interns and seasoned Esri professionals alike. It was intensive, packed with learning and culminating in a project that challenged him to grow. And it was eye-opening, revealing how GIS is the cornerstone of almost everything, shaping industries and transforming communities.

Among the many lessons he took away, Mwangi highlights one in particular: working in a diverse environment of highly qualified professionals. It wasn’t just about technical skills; it was about seeing social and professional dynamics in action, understanding how collaboration and adaptability drive results.

Challenges came, too – like when Mwangi tried to render a high-fidelity 3D scene with multiple layers that kept crashing his system. Frustration gave way to triumph, as he learned to troubleshoot effectively, proving that every problem has a solution. This experience, he says, reflects the very essence of GIS: understand the problem, choose the right tool, and craft the solution.

Mwangi’s favorite playground? 3D data in ArcGIS, particularly Scene Viewer. The ability to create near-digital twins of the world, integrating real-time data like weather via Python, captivated him. It made GIS not just a tool, but a way to visualize, simulate, and understand the world in ways that are tangible and impactful.

Collaboration was another cornerstone of his growth. Engaging with mentors, peers, and Esri staff not only enhanced his technical knowledge but also boosted his interpersonal skills. Their welcoming, supportive, and sometimes lighthearted approach allowed him to learn in an environment that balanced guidance with autonomy.

One proud moment stands out: presenting his final project with clarity and confidence. The recognition and feedback he received affirmed how far he had come and reinforced his belief in his capabilities.

Looking ahead, Mwangi is focused on outcomes rather than tasks. The Motivation Behind the Internship

Nixon was drawn to Esri Eastern Africa because of the company’s reputation as a regional leader in geospatial innovation. “I wanted to gain practical experience with ArcGIS tools directly from the source,” he shares. “The organization’s mission to transform communities through spatial intelligence aligned perfectly with my goal of promoting data-driven environmental management and sustainable solutions.”

He first learned about Esri EA through university coursework that incorporated ArcGIS software and online platforms showcasing GIS capacity-building programs. What stood out most was the company’s dedication to empowering individuals and organizations through technical excellence and mentorship, making it the perfect environment for practical learning and professional growth.

Expectations vs. Reality

Initially, Nixon expected to gain a foundational understanding of ArcGIS, create maps, and manage spatial data. However, his experience exceeded those expectations. Through hands-on projects and structured training, he delved into advanced workflows like data preprocessing, spatial analysis, and web publishing, gaining a deeper appreciation of how GIS supports real-world problem-solving in environmental engineering.

A Day in the Life at Esri EA

A typical day for Nixon involved:

• Self-paced learning sessions guided by manuals and tutorials
• Step-by-step exercises in ArcGIS Pro, including importing datasets, setting spatial references, cleaning and classifying data, and symbolizing features
• Exploring ArcGIS Online applications for visualization and publishing

Whenever challenges arose, the trainers provided guidance, ensuring that Nixon could fully understand and apply the concepts. “Each exercise taught me not only technical skills but also how these workflows can address real-world environmental challenges,” he reflects.

Projects That Made an Impact

The most rewarding experience for Nixon was the Air Quality Monitoring and Awareness Project, where he analyzed AirQo sensor data to assess air quality trends in Kampala. By cleaning and validating PM2.5 data, visualizing it spatially, and interpreting pollution patterns, Nixon witnessed firsthand how GIS can inform public health initiatives and environmental sustainability policies.

Working with incomplete datasets and limited access to ArcGIS Online credits posed challenges. Nixon overcame these obstacles by:

• Learning advanced data cleaning and geoprocessing techniques
• Performing analyses offline in ArcGIS Pro
• Exploring alternative workflows to maximize accuracy without relying on cloud-based processing

These challenges taught him the importance of adaptability, problem-solving, and resourcefulness in GIS workflows.

Evolving Perspective on GIS

Before the internship, Nixon saw GIS primarily as a mapping tool. Now, he understands it as a powerful decision-support system that integrates data, analysis, and visualization. From environmental monitoring to infrastructure planning and disaster management, GIS has become an essential part of his engineering toolkit.

Internship Highlights

One of Nixon’s favorite moments was visualizing air quality across Kampala after several iterations of data cleaning and mapping. Seeing spatial differences in pollution come to life on a map provided him with a sense of accomplishment and reinforced the practical impact of his work. He also valued the teamwork and idea-sharing during group projects, celebrating milestones together with peers.

Reflections and Career Plans

A Day in the Life of an Esri EA Intern

My typical day started with reviewing project updates and refining geospatial workflows using ArcGIS Pro or Python. Collaboration was key, I worked closely with teams in Solutions and Professional Services, processing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data for projects like the Sarangombe WASH initiative.

Afternoons were often dedicated to preparing dashboards, story maps, and reports, as well as attending check-ins to ensure quality and project progress.

Most Rewarding Projects

The Sarangombe WASH project was the highlight of my internship. Mapping sanitation facilities, identifying manhole choke risks, and analyzing population density in informal settlements gave me the satisfaction of seeing my work translated into actionable insights for local authorities. Knowing that my contributions could help improve public health and sanitation management was incredibly fulfilling.

Skills I Gained

During my internship, I honed a variety of technical skills:

• ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Dashboards, and Survey123
• Python-based spatial analysis using ArcPy
• Data cleaning, spatial modeling, and dashboard design

Can you tell us about a project or accomplishment you’re proud of and why?

During my internship at Esri EA, I had the privilege of collaborating with a talented partner on a project-the development of a flood early warning system. Together, we utilized GIS technologies to analyze data, create a predictive model, and integrate communication platforms for sending SMS alerts to the community when River Nyando water level reached a specific threshold. This experience emphasized the significance of teamwork and effective communication. I take pride in the successful outcome of the project and the opportunity to contribute to enhancing community safety through our efforts.
